1. The Athlete — Anatomy & Structure
Every pitcher is built differently. Body proportions, joint structure, mobility, strength, and throwing history can all influence how an athlete moves and creates force.
When evaluating a pitcher, I consider characteristics such as:
- Pelvic and hip structure
- Femur, tibia, and fibula length
- Leg-to-height and torso proportions
- Shoulder and scapular structure
- Arm length and segment proportions
- Hand and finger dimensions
- Shoulder and hip range of motion
These characteristics are largely structural and cannot be changed through training. However, understanding them provides important context for evaluating movement and determining what mechanical strategies may work best for an individual athlete.
Range of motion also needs to be viewed in context. For example, throwing athletes can develop differences in shoulder internal and external rotation over time. Rather than evaluating one measurement in isolation, I look at the athlete's total range of motion, side-to-side differences, symptoms, workload, and throwing history.
The goal is to understand the athlete before trying to change the athlete.
